When we designed and developed The Wheelhouse, we didn’t really know exactly what the “culture” would be like. Culture is made up of a collection of people and, before the doors are open, you don’t really know what that collection of people will look like. So, after almost two years of being in business, we’ve started to understand who we’ve become. Some of it is intentional, some of it just happened.
So, if you were to ask me, “What is The Wheelhouse like?”, here is the answer I would give.
1. The Wheelhouse is focused on marketers but isn’t exclusively made up of marketers. Many of our people are in marketing-related fields but not everyone. We have designers (print and online), developers, photographers, analysts, content writers, branding, digital agencies, event managers and then we have a smattering of other industries like non-profit and engineering. Of course, through The Wheelhouse Group, we all work together as one marketing agency, so those that are here just to enjoy the space (and company) don’t get factored into the agency equation.
2. The Wheelhouse is home to more mature companies. This is one of those unintentional things that just “happened.” Most of our people have been in business for themselves or with their organization for five plus years. They know what they are doing and have a steady stream of their own business. We have almost no new startups.
3. The people of the Wheelhouse are focused. This is mostly due to the fact that we have more mature companies with a lot of work but, while we encourage conversation, mingling, networking, etc., most people are pretty heads-down focused on their business. Everyone is very friendly and there are plenty of conversations around the coffee maker, but there are no ping-pong tables, beer kegs, or corn-hole competitions going on. There’s plenty of laughter but most people in our space have families and prefer to spend work time doing their work and any “extra” time with their families. We hear this phrase all the time: “I get SO much done when I’m here!”
4. The last thing I would say is that The Wheelhouse is very comfortable. From the warm colors to natural building materials, background music, furniture, and the attitudes of everyone here, it’s just like you’re working from a really big living room. There’s something about it that makes you want to put your feet up on the coffee table and relax on the sofa while powering through your to-do list.
Many people who are looking for a shared work space are looking for a young, hip, high-energy space. We are glad that there are spaces like that here in Greenville. It is just not who we have become and we are comfortable embracing that.
